My wife and I stopped by KYAY a couple of years ago on our way to the Essence of Tranquility Hot Springs 5 miles south of Safford. Somehow we scanned the FM airwaves and found this cool San Carlos Apache radio station at 91.1FM and started listening to various shows. They played a lot of Reggae mixed in on different DJ shows, so I grabbed some CDs that i had made of old-school Reggae songs and decided to donate them to the station.

When we arrived and went in, the DJ that was hosting the show then was Ardell. He is a big, friendly man and invited us in to sit down and chat. In between our short talks he would key up new music. We left happy to have connected to him and the station. You see, the San Carlos Apache Reservation is our favorite place to explore and camp. Except for the towns, it's like the Arizona I first knew in 1972. We go for days sometimes without seeing another vehicle or person. Peaceful, wild nature.

A month or so ago I was passing by again when my wife tuned in the station. Low and behold it was a Reggae show, hosted by Tom Patten, that runs form 12noon to 6pm on certain Saturdays every month. I c aled in and said hello and asked him if it would be OK to send him some more music. He was cool with it since we had talked briefly and both have a large catalog of Ragga music in our minds. I'll visit him soon on another visit.

Look for the big Bob Marley mural on the KYAY building's southern-facing wall. Next to it you'll see several large photovoltaic panels mounted on a huge stand. The entire stsion is able to run continuously off the grid if needed, like it did some years ago after a powerful storm knocked out the town's electric power for days. You might call in advance since they do not always have regular hours. Hey, that's the way they ride on the Res.
